A Fresh Start for

TONI GONZAGA

Nothing is permanent in this world. Every new day offers changes and challenges that make life more exciting. No one gets stuck in just one phase forever. There will always be a point when we have to move on, trek a new road to further explore the world of the unknown.

Talented Toni Gonzaga is no exception. Recently, the 21- year-old lass made a crucial decision of leaving GMA-7 for ABSCBN 2. It’s true that she received critical reactions for what she did. But her decision improves her craft especially now that’s she’s in new grounds. It is like a fresh start for her.

What can you say about your new home?
“Regarding my transfer to ABS-CBN-2, masaya naman but of course, ‘di mo maaalis na there are times na nangangapa ako kasi I’m so used na to my working condition sa GMA-7. But I know, eventually, I’ll blend na with my co- tars. So far, so good kasi ‘yung mga kasamahan ko sa show, eh mababait at ‘di mahirap pakisamahan. It’s a good thing that I’m working with veterans like Amy Perez and Roderick Paulate. They’re helping me cope with the other hosts. They make me feel at home. ’Yon ang importante. “I admit that it’s very different here kasi, I’m exerting extra effort in terms of pakikisama with other people. Mas more ‘yung adjustment on my part. Ngayon, mas ako ‘yung nag-aaral sa environment. I see it as a challenge naman, eh. “Actually last year pa lang, may negotiation na. It’s a family decision. Pinag-isipan naming mabuti kaya I was able to prepare early and they supported me along the way,” avers Toni.

What are your newshows in ABS-CBN?
MRS, Entertainment Konek, ASAP and Wazzup Wazzup.

How do you react when people say you’re an effective comedienne?
“About my comedy hinahayaan ko na lang. I don’t put it in the head. That they say I’m good and my timing is perfect. I don’t want to be pressured. Siyempre, I am thankful that I’m noticed. But for me, I wanna take things as they are. ‘Yung casual lang. Mas maganda lumalabas, mas natural.”

Aside from TV, do you have projects outside ABS-CBN? “Like film projects?
I’m doing one for Star Cinema with Vhong Navarro. Watch out for it. My recording is also being negotiated under Star Records.”

Looking back, how did you feel when the controversy was its peak?
“Honestly, gano’n pala ‘yon when you’re in the eye of the storm. Nakakaiyak. I could hardly sleep. I was particular with what the people will say about me. Mahirap pala ‘yon. You feel that everyone’s judging you. What’s good is that my family’s there, I draw strength from them. It’s during those times that I felt their love the most. ‘Pag ‘di ako makatulog, I wake them up.”

What are you career goals?
“My goal is to further hone my skills so the public won’t get tired of me easily. With lots to offer them, I’m certain they’ll give me their support. Ako, I’d rather get myself busy with selfadvancement activities rather than wallow in negative things. I’ve this Bible verse that I always follow, its goes: “Many are the plans in a man’s heart but it’s always God drive the wheel for me,” I have so many dreams pa. Basta, I promise to do my best.”

What can the public expect from you now that you’re with a new network?
“Now that I’m with ABS, the public can expect that I’d still be the same Toni that they know. I’m still in the adjustment period but I’m sure I’ll get the hang of it. People here naman are supportive and kind. “It is inspiring that I’m working with new people and they welcome me with open arms.” DP
