RHEA SANTOS:
Closer to her Kababayans |
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
| |
From the pre-sunshine reporting in “Unang Hirit” to solving problems in “At Your Service,” Rhea Santos is taking her own sense of public service in “Pinoy Abroad” which premiered last April 6 on GMA-7.
Rhea is the latest in the GMA News and Public Affairs to be given the chance to host a documentary style talk show with equally talented Ivan Mayrina as co-host. Together, they will feature the Filipinos working abroad, their achievements, problems, successes and failures. She assured us this will not be the usual travelogue. |
" There are about 4,000 Filipinos
who leave the country. We are here
to tell their story."

At
Annabel’s
Restaurant
where
this
interview
took
place,
Rhea
was
a
picture
of a
young,
accomplished
lady.
She
was
very
proud
of
the
show
as
it
brings
her
close
to
her
kababayans.
She
said
she
enjoys
doing
features
with
Filipinos
as
subjects.
This
show,
Rhea
emphasized,
is
for
the
Filipinos.
“There
are
about
4,000
Filipino
who
leave
the
country.
We
are
here
to
tell
their
story,”
she
said
in
the
media
huddle.
For
the
initial
episode,
Pinoy
Abroad
tackled
OFW
in
Japan.
But
more
than
giving
the
televiewers
a
barrage
of
features
on
Japayukis,
the
two-part
episode
also
documented
Filipino
boxers’
experience
in
Japan
ringside.
“Alam
mo,
maawa
ka
sa
Filipino
boxers
doon.
Imagine,
wala
silang
suporta.
Wala
silang
kababayan
who
would
cheer
for
them.
It’s
really
a
sad
experience
for
our
Filipino
boxers,”
she
shared.
She
also
disclosed
that
with
the
imposition
of
stricter
laws
on
Filipino
entertainment
workers
in
Japan,
there
are
only
a
handful
of
entertainers
there.
Filipinas
there
are
mostly
residents
now.
Before
embarking
on
newscasting,
this
Magna
Cum
Laude
from
St.
Paul’s
College
joined
many
beauty
contests.
She
said
it
was
her
mom’s
dream
to
see
her
wear
a
crown
and
represent
the
country
in
beauty
pageants
abroad.
But
she
was
not
as
successful
as
other
contestants
so
she
stopped
joining
beauty
competitions.
After
completing
her
college
course,
Rhea
immediately
applied
in
GMA-7
and
was
lucky
enough
to
have
been
asked
to
report
for
work
the
next
day.
Initially,
she
was
given
the
fashion
and
lifestyle
beat.
Moving
on
in
her
career,
she
was
asked
to
join
the
“IWitness”
team.
Her
most
memorable
segments
were
the
Siga
ng
Tondo
and
prostitution
in
Cebu.
To
be
able
to
penetrate
the
sex
den,
Rhea
even
posed
as a
sex
worker.
That’s
how
dedicated
this
young
lady
is
in
her
work.
Rhea
is
now
married
to
her
longtime
boyfriend
Carlo
de
Guzman
and
her
marriage
was
televised
on
GMA-7.
As a
show,
Pinoy
Abroad
is
an
integration
of
anything
that
is
mainly
concerned
about
OFWs.
It
has
three
segments,
issues
involving
an
OFW;
a
travelogue
that
is
all
about
the
country
featured;
and
profile
of
an
accomplished
OFW.
But
more
than
this,
the
show
also
tackles
the
minutest
details
of
the
country
being
featured,
from
the
food
to
tourist
spots
to
language
and
culture.
It
will
also
dish
out
tips
on
where
to
reach
the
Philippine
embassy
in
case
of a
problem.
It
will
also
teach
OFWs
of
their
rights.
