EPY: Quizon of All Trades

"I'm very flattered when people say that I'd be the next Dolphy but I refuse to believe I can fill in the shoes of my father. There will never be another Dolphy."

Hardworking and industrious are two words that may best describe Epy Quizon right now. He co-hosts “Road Trip,” a travel show with his brother Eric. He is also host of “Art Jam,” an arts and crafts educational show for children. Epy is also, of course, a mainstay of “Quizon Avenue.” In the field cinema, Epy has just completed plenty of full length features: Pinoy Blonde for avant garde director Peque Gallaga, Las Pungols for independent filmmaker Sig Barrios Sanchez, Pepot Artista for acclaimed writer/director Doy del Mundo, and Boso, Jon Red’s sexy digital movie for Viva Films. Boso, Epy points out is a “very experimental film that’s very, very sexy.”

With the variety of projects that he’s been doing, Epy is able to reach out to a wide range of audiences. At the same time, these fulfill his creative side. “I love being on the edge. I love experimenting. I am an actor. That’s what I do. I love entertaining people, from kids to adults.” Aside from his TV and film work, Epy is also a photographer and an events organizer. Like his brother Eric, Epy has also tried his hand at directing, particularly a few audio-visual presentations for corporate clients.

Directing a film is one of his future goals but Epy believes that has to take a while. “I’m thinking of a right project before I direct. ‘Pag tama at ‘pag gusto ko ang proyekto, saka ako sasalang. I’m still into the learning process.” He makes an effort to observe the directors he's working with. “Binabantayan ko how they do their scenes. I try to learn from them,” says Epy.

What makes his profession more interesting for him is the chance to meet and interact with people and learn from them. For Epy, there is still so much to see and discover. “I learn from everyone. Lahat mentor ko,” he underscores. “Even anak ko, mentor ko. Natututunan ko sa kanya kung paano maging tatay.” Yes Epy is a father. He has a son who is now ten years old and lives in the United States. While Epy prefers to keep that part of his life private, he is proud to say that his son is the inspiration in his career and more importantly, his life.

Epy is eager to take on more creative pursuits as an actor. “I want things that would challenge me. I want a role that I would learn from.” We ask Epy how old he is and he pauses before answering. “Thirty two,” he says. “Nag-isip pa kasi wala na sa kalendaryo!”

He dreams of having a farm in the province where he could grow vegetables to eat. “Actually kung hindi ako artista, malamang agriculturist ako,” says Epy. “Aside from having a family of my own, and sticking to a career path in entertainment, it’s still hard for me to see what my main goal in life is.” Whatever Epy chooses, we’re pretty certain that his choices would be very exciting!
